Set up charging playback
- Choose a sound. Vocalcord’s current library has 93 sounds: 9 are marked free and 84 are Premium. Imported custom clips require Premium to use as a charging sound.
- Open the Charging sound screen in Vocalcord and turn charging playback on.
- Follow the in-app prompts. Allow background running where your phone requests it. On recent Android versions, allow notifications if prompted so Vocalcord can show and control its charging service.
- Tap “Test it now.” If you do not hear the test, raise media volume. Vocalcord plays on media volume, which is separate from ringer volume.
- Connect the charger to check the charging trigger.
Vocalcord requires Android 8.0 or later. Permission and battery-settings screens vary by Android version and phone manufacturer.
If the sound does not play
- Open Vocalcord and check that charging playback is enabled and its status is active.
- Check media volume, then use Test it now to separate playback volume from charger detection.
- If Android reports background running is restricted, follow the prompt on Vocalcord’s Charging sound screen. Some phones may pause apps in the background.
- If you force-stopped Vocalcord or restarted the phone, reopen the app and check its charging status again.
- When the in-app test succeeds, try a real charger connection. The in-app test checks audio playback; it does not test the charger event.
What the charging sound does
When charging playback is enabled and Android allows Vocalcord to run in the background, the app plays your selected sound on a charging event. Vocalcord adds a sound to the charging event. Your phone’s system charging chime is controlled separately, where the manufacturer provides a setting. Playback can depend on background restrictions and media volume.
Using an iPhone?
On iPhone, Vocalcord uses a guided one-time Shortcuts automation and requires iOS 17 or later. See the iPhone charging-sound guide. For audio and video imports, see the custom-audio guide.
