Fix 1: "Ask Before Running" is still enabled
This is the #1 cause. When "Ask Before Running" is on, iOS shows a notification asking you to confirm the automation instead of just running it. Most people don't realize they need to turn this off.
- Open the Shortcuts app.
- Tap the Automation tab.
- Tap your charging automation.
- Toggle off "Ask Before Running".
- Tap Done.
Plug in your charger to test. If this was the issue, your sound should now play automatically.
Fix 2: Silent Mode is blocking the sound
Some iOS versions suppress Shortcuts automation sounds when your phone is in Silent Mode (the physical switch on the side of your iPhone).
- Quick check: Look at the side of your iPhone. If you see an orange dot on the mute switch, Silent Mode is on. Flip it off.
- Focus Mode too: Do Not Disturb and custom Focus modes can also suppress sounds. Check Control Center.
If you want your charging sound to play even in Silent Mode, Vocalcord has a Silent Mode Override feature that solves this.
Fix 3: The automation got disabled
It's easy to accidentally disable an automation without deleting it.
- Open Shortcuts → Automation.
- Find your charging automation in the list.
- Make sure the toggle next to it is green (enabled).
If the automation is missing entirely, you'll need to recreate it. See our complete setup guide.
Fix 4: Shortcuts needs notification permissions
Shortcuts automations sometimes need notification access to run properly.
- Go to Settings → Notifications → Shortcuts.
- Make sure Allow Notifications is turned on.
Fix 5: Volume is too low
Here's one that trips up a lot of people: charging sounds play at your media volume, not your ringer volume. These are two separate volume controls on iPhone.
- Play any video or song.
- While it's playing, press the volume up button to raise media volume.
- Now plug in your charger and test.
Fix 6: The audio file was moved or deleted
If you're using a custom audio file (not Vocalcord's built-in sounds), the automation will fail silently if the file no longer exists where Shortcuts expects it.
- Check the Files app to make sure your audio file is still there.
- If it was in iCloud Drive, it may have been offloaded. Open it once to re-download.
- If the file was deleted, you'll need to add a new one and update the automation.
This is one reason apps like Vocalcord are more reliable — the sound files are stored inside the app, so they don't get accidentally deleted or moved.
Fix 7: iOS update reset your automation
Major iOS updates (like going from iOS 17 to iOS 18) occasionally reset or break Shortcuts automations. If your sound stopped working right after an update:
- Open Shortcuts → Automation.
- Check if your charging automation still exists.
- If it's gone, recreate it using our step-by-step guide.
- If it exists but isn't working, try deleting it and creating a fresh one.
Still not working?
If you've tried all 7 fixes and your charging sound still won't play:
- Restart your iPhone. A simple reboot fixes a surprising number of Shortcuts issues.
- Try Vocalcord. If you've been using the DIY Shortcuts method, Vocalcord handles the automation setup for you and is generally more reliable. It also includes Silent Mode Override and shuffle mode.
