Does it work on iPhone 14?
Yes. The iPhone 14 line shipped with iOS 16 and all models support the Shortcuts app, which is how custom charging sounds work. If you're on iOS 16 or later (which you are, unless you've been avoiding updates), you're good.
The iPhone 14 was the last iPhone generation to use a Lightning connector — but that doesn't matter for charging sounds. The automation fires on the charger-connected event, not the cable type.
Method 1: Using Vocalcord (fastest)
- Download Vocalcord from the App Store.
- Browse the sound library — 93 sounds across categories. Tap any sound to preview.
- Tap "Set as Charging Sound" and follow the guided one-time Shortcuts setup.
- Plug in your Lightning cable or drop on MagSafe to test.
That's it. Want to change it later? Open Vocalcord, tap a different sound, done.
Method 2: Using Shortcuts (manual)
The DIY route via the built-in Shortcuts app:
- Save an audio file to Files (MP3/M4A/WAV/AIFF).
- Open Shortcuts → Automation.
- Tap + → Create Personal Automation.
- Select "Charger" → "Is Connected" → Next.
- Tap "New Blank Automation", search "Play Sound", pick your audio.
- Toggle off "Ask Before Running" and tap Done.
The setup steps depend on iOS version. Screenshots + detail in the full guide.
Lightning, MagSafe, and wireless
Charging sounds fire on any charger type — the connector is invisible to the automation:
- Lightning cable: Works. This is the default for most iPhone 14 owners.
- MagSafe: Works. The magnetic snap doubles as a satisfying lead-in to your sound.
- Qi wireless: Works on any Qi pad or stand.
iOS 16 versus iOS 17 on iPhone 14
iPhone 14 launched with iOS 16 and supports the latest iOS too. A few differences:
- iOS 16: Charging automations work, but "Ask Before Running" can occasionally re-enable after OS updates.
- iOS 17+: Much more stable — automations fire consistently and the "Ask Before Running" toggle stays off.
If you're on iOS 16 and your charging sound has ever flaked out, updating to iOS 17 or later is the one-line fix.
Not working?
- Check silent/ring switch: If the ringer is off, audio may behave differently. Check the ringer and iOS audio settings, and review Vocalcord’s “Play even in silent mode” option.
- Check "Ask Before Running": Shortcuts → Automation → your automation → toggle off.
- Check media volume: Play any video first to confirm media volume isn't muted.
