Does it work on iPhone 16?
Absolutely. Custom charging sounds work on any iPhone running iOS 14 or later. iPhone 16 ships with iOS 18, which has full support for Shortcuts automations — the feature that powers custom charging sounds.
The setup process is identical whether you have an iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, or 16 Pro Max. The USB-C connector doesn't change anything — the automation triggers on any charger connection.
Method 1: Using Vocalcord (fastest)
- Download Vocalcord from the App Store.
- Browse the sound library — 85+ sounds in categories like comedy, memes, movies, anime, and animals. Tap any sound to preview.
- Tap "Set as Charging Sound" and follow the one-tap setup.
- Plug in your USB-C cable (or place on MagSafe) to test.
That's it. About 15 seconds total. Want to change the sound later? Open Vocalcord, pick a different one, and it updates automatically.
Method 2: Using Shortcuts (manual)
If you'd rather do it yourself without an app:
- Save an audio file to the Files app on your iPhone 16. MP3, M4A, WAV, or AIFF all work.
- Open the Shortcuts app and tap Automation.
- Tap + → Create Personal Automation.
- Select "Charger" → "Is Connected" → Next.
- Tap "New Blank Automation", search for "Play Sound", and select your audio file.
- Toggle off "Ask Before Running" and tap Done.
This method takes 5–10 minutes. For a more detailed walkthrough with screenshots, see our complete charging sound guide.
USB-C, MagSafe, and wireless charging
A common question with iPhone 16: does the charging sound work with all charger types?
Yes — all of them:
- USB-C cable: Triggers the sound when connected. This is the most common way to charge iPhone 16.
- MagSafe: Triggers the sound when the phone snaps onto the charger. The satisfying MagSafe click followed by your custom sound is a great combo.
- Qi wireless: Triggers the sound when charging begins on any Qi-compatible pad or stand.
The Shortcuts automation doesn't care about the connector type. It fires on the "charger connected" event, which iOS reports for any charging method.
iOS 18 Shortcuts changes
iOS 18 (which comes on iPhone 16) made some improvements to Shortcuts automations:
- More reliable triggering: Apple improved the consistency of automation triggers in iOS 18. Charging automations fire more reliably than on older iOS versions.
- Same setup process: The steps to create a charging automation haven't changed. If you've done this on an older iPhone, it's identical.
- "Ask Before Running" stays off: Once you disable "Ask Before Running," it's more stable in iOS 18 — less likely to re-enable after updates.
Not working?
If your charging sound isn't playing on iPhone 16:
- Check Silent Mode: If the Action Button is set to toggle Silent Mode, make sure it's not muted.
- Check "Ask Before Running": Open Shortcuts → Automation → your automation. Make sure this is toggled off.
- Check media volume: Charging sounds play at media volume, not ringer volume. Play a video and turn up the volume.
